With an educational background in tropical soils and entomology and a previous role as manager of a butterfly house, Tamsin Job isn’t the typical person you’d expect to find taking a diploma in accounting. After deciding to expand her career options and develop a skillset she could use anywhere in the world, Tamsin sought out Pitman Training to help her spread her wings.
“I first found out about Pitman through my mum, as she had trained with them around 40 years ago. She said they were great and offered a range of courses that I would be interested in. So, choosing them as my training provider was a no brainer for me. After a bit of research, I decided to take the Foundation Diploma in Accounting – AAT. I wanted to future proof my career and knew the accounting diploma would be recognised worldwide so I could do bookkeeping from any location. Going from working with bugs to taking my diploma was a huge leap as I’d always been told that numbers weren’t my strong point but I just wanted to prove to myself I could do it!”
“I started off training in the centre on weekdays because I had a funny shift pattern at work. Funnily enough, I was apprehensive about the courses being very flexible before starting with Pitman because I like to have organisation and structure in my life. However, I benefitted so much from learning at my own pace, and the flexible scheduling proved instrumental in helping me succeed. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t nerve-racking going back into education after 20 years. Still, once I got the hang of it, it was terrific. As soon as I stepped into the training centre, all my worries disappeared because of the amazing support from the Pitman team. They had so much patience and knowledge of the subjects that they assist with.”
“When the pandemic hit and I was put on furlough, I studied entirely online which, to my surprise, actually turned out to be easier for me than in-centre learning. Going online meant I had much more free time to study as I didn’t have to travel to the centre. The online training is also where I got the most benefit from my learning coach. They were always on hand to help and were only a click of a button away. It was invaluable to have the option to talk through my problems with someone whenever I needed help.”

Taking this course has helped me prove to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to and I feel so much more motivated and better about myself because of it.
